A Practice Report On Addition In C-E Consecutive Interpreting Based On Interpreting In A Seminar Held By The Ministry Of Agriculture

Addition,which is generally classified into addition for the refinement of interpreting and unwarranted addition,is of great significance in interpreting studies on deviations between the interpretation and the source language.Based on the author's C-E interpreting practice during the "2016 Seminar on Modern Agricultural Technology and Food Security for Developing Countries" held by the Ministry of Agriculture,this thesis takes addition,especially unwarranted addition,as its research subject.Guided by Gile's Effort Model and the Code of Conduct for interpreters,this thesis analyzes cases of addition for the refinement and unwarranted addition,explores potential reasons for unwarranted addition,and provides suggestions respectively.Cases of addition for the refinement of interpreting are analyzed syntactically and semantically according to Liao Qiyi's classification,and cases of unwarranted addition are mainly categorized according to Barik's criteria,to which another category of“loose addition" is added in the thesis.Based on the case analysis,the following conclusions can be drawn:addition for the refinement of interpreting facilitates cross-cultural communication,while unwarranted addition greatly reduces communication efficiency and ruins the trust of the speakers and the audience;poor coordination of processing capability,insufficient language ability and improper self-perceptions are potential causes of unwarranted addition;interpreters should take stylistic features of the originals into consideration and enrich prerequisite knowledge persistently to enhance addition for the refinement of interpreting,and filter unnecessary information,improve the coordination of processing capabilities,and interpret concisely,accurately and fluently to avoid unwarranted addition.
