As one of the greatest masterpieces of traditional Chinese literature,Hongloumeng is known as “an encyclopedia of the last years of feudalism”.Successful image-building is one of its creative achievements, with hundreds of characters vividly portrayed. There are many versions of Hongloumeng in different languages. The translators build auto or hetero-images through the translation. This thesis aims to analyze the image of Xue Pan in the two full English versions of Hongloumeng from the perspective of Imagology.By conducting a comparative study of the translations of David Hawkes and the Yangs, this paper tries to find out how the image of Xue Pan varies from the original and explore the reasons that lead to these deviations. This paper carries out its case study from three aspects: imaginaire social, translator's emotion, aesthetic imagination and cultural orientation, and the reader's acceptance towards the text.
