In recent years,China has been putting more and more emphases on the higher vocational education year by year,and the higher vocational education in China is experiencing an unprecedented good situation of development.However,there is an indisputable fact that,owing to the higher vocational college students being different from the undergraduates,the traditional English teaching mode used for years in colleges or universities has been increasingly performed like a fish out of water when carried out in higher vocational college English teaching,resulting in mutual blaming among the teachers and the students as well as in an embarrassing dilemma that the higher vocational college English teaching cannot be gone on with.To implement "student-centered" teaching philosophy rather than "teacher-centered" one,highlight the philosophy of educating students in accordance with their aptitude in the process of teaching and strive to cultivate the students' abilities of autonomous learning,that is,building the active exploration and construction of knowledge and cognition,the personnel in higher education have carried out extensive researches and discussions with the aim to explore an effective path.Hierarchical teaching thus arises and receives widespread attention and application.Based on the principles of educating students in accordance with their aptitude and constructivist teaching theory of pedagogy,Hunan Vocational and Technical College of Transportation in which the author has been working for many years has been committing to a series of reform and exploration and pioneers provincially in carrying out the hierarchical teaching mode with certain characteristics of higher vocational college.Years of teaching practice has proved that the hierarchical teaching in our school is successful and productive.In this study,based on the analysis of hierarchical teaching status at home and abroad in recent years,the latest guidelines of higher vocational English teaching and the interpretation in the related basic theory,and combining with the authors' years of teaching experience in Hunan Vocational and Technical College of Transportation,the author does some empirical researches so as to prove that the hierarchical teaching mode is theoretically scientific and reasonable and practically feasible and urgent.Through empirical and comparative researches and according to the actual situations of different levels of teaching classes,we can draw a conclusion that the hierarchical teaching mode in higher vocational public English can be tailored to select teaching contents and teaching plan and evaluation mechanism in order to implement the classification guidance mode and the personalized teaching and learning according to the students' aptitude.At the same time,it eliminates teaching and learning models of average type,effectively avoids such an awkward situation that under the environment of the uniformed teaching contents and the teaching plans the top students suffer from "starvation" but the underachievers from "conspiracy",and also effectively solves the problems of higher vocational college English teaching's time-consuming but less fruits.
