English Curriculum Standard of Full-time Compulsory Education(2012)clearly points out that students' positive learning attitude is one of the decisive factors in English study,and teachers are supposed to stimulate and enhance students' learning interest constantly in teaching practice.Based on pupils' cognitive level,game teaching becomes an essential tool for teachers to stimulate students' learning interest.In fact,game teaching has been widely used by teachers in primary school English class.What is the current status of applying game teaching in primary school English class? Are there any application problems in the process?These are what the author wants to probe in this study.This research takes pupils and teachers in Primary School Attached to Xi'an Foreign Language School(XFLS)as participants to investigate the status quo of English game teaching in primary school through classroom observation,questionnaire and interview.The results of classroom observation directly reflect the overall situation of four English teachers in low grades using game teaching for a certain period of time.In addition,190 students in low grades from four classes and all English teachers in lower grades are surveyed to learn their attitudes about English game teaching from both sides and present a long-term picture of using English game teaching.Besides,the interview with teachers contributes to getting further insight into teaching considerations of English game teaching.The results show that teachers have already known the advantages of English game teaching,and game teaching is commonly used in primary school English class.However,several practical problems of English game teaching still need to be solved.On the whole,teachers' understanding of game teaching is mostly based on their teaching experience,but they do not have adequate theoretical knowledge about English game teaching.In game design,teachers underuse communicative games and original games.In game implementation,some problems of English game teaching exist in the aspect of classroom discipline.In game evaluation,teachers' remarks are somewhat superficial and monotonous.In view of the above problems,the following solutions are proposed by the author.First,it is necessary tostrengthen the training for English teachers about game teaching.Second,in game design,it is advised for teachers to design games by themselves,which aims to encourage students to use language more freely and stimulate authentic language use.Besides,in game implementation,it is better for teachers to have an appropriate degree of control over the whole class in the aspects of clear game rules,successful time management,and suitable students grouping.Lastly,in game evaluation,diversified evaluation methods are recommended,especially evaluation words.In conclusion,English game teaching in various forms can inspire students' passion to learn actively.After the research,it is hoped that this paper can make a little contribution to the improvement of English game teaching.
