An Exploratory Research On Quality And Cost Of Patent Translation Based On CAT+MT+PE Mode

This thesis relates to an experiment research on the relationship between the translation quality and the translation cost of patent translation.Taking three types of patent documents and English-majored graduate students as subjects,the thesis intends to explore the effect computer aided translation(CAT)on the quality and cost of patent translation under the translation mode of machine translation plus post editing(MT+PE),so as to find out which type of patent document is most suitable to be translated with CAT.The experiment results show that,for different types of patent texts,the involvement of CAT takes most significant effect on the translation quality and cost of patent application documents;it takes a less significant effect on the translation quality and cost of patent search reports,and it takes the least effect on the translation quality and cost of patent abstracts.Therefore,CAT is most suitable to be used in the translation of patent application documents,more suitable to be used in the translation of patent search reports,and is not suitable to be used the translation of patent abstracts.The significant of this research lies in that language service providers can decide whether to use CAT according to different types of patent documents and quality requirements by customers,so as to achieve the maximum return on investment.
