"To learn and absorb from the outside world and cultivate one’s own capability are the main sources of creation."is a Chinese painting theory long proposed, advocating painters should feel the nature with genuine sensibilities and transform those feelings acquired from nature into their works, which is also a dominant method of traditional sketching.Due to the restriction of painting conditions, the methods of traditional and contemporary sketching have certain differences.Ancient flower-bird sketching depends mainly on one’s observation and memory that were used later in painting, while contemporary flower-bird sketching is influenced by modern western fine arts education system, which concerns direct and instant creation, accurately reflects the characteristics of the target objects,or blindly copying others’ ways of expression, thus neglecting the individual perceptual knowledge of the environment. This thesis aims to put forward the importance of preserving perceptual knowledge in flower-bird sketching and demonstrate the related methods. It is divided into four sections:i.to discuss the problems existed in contemporary flower-bird sketching and come up with the possible solution and emphasize the importance of sketching;ii.starting from the concept of sketching and cognition, the author discusses the development of the painter’s perceptions of sketching;iii.to summarize the significance and methods of preserving perceptual knowledge in sketching, through illustrating the perceptual knowledge of flower-bird painting;iv.to depict the perceptual knowledge in the practice of sketching, combined with the creation process of flower-bird painting.Perceptual knowledge is an indispensable component of creative inspiration. Therefore,we reserve the perceptual knowledge of flower-bird sketching, bringing fresh vitality to our works.
