Film As A Type Of Public Sphere

Alexander Kluge is one of the most important filmmaker of contemporary Germany.He is not only the initiator of the new German film,but also the representative director of the post-war modern German film and a famed scholar in the field of contemporary western film research.Chinese academics are not familiar with Kluge's film contribution.Even though Alexander Kluge's theme film exhibitions and related academic seminars have been held repeatedly during recent years,Kluge's film theory is still rarely been mentioned.In fact,Kluge's theory of the public sphere of film has already showed appealing to many foreign scholars and as a new direction to investigate in the research of theory of contemporary film.Kluge's film and public sphere theory will be analyzed in following paragraphs,which will be based on Kluge's film practice.The thesis is divided into three parts: the first part will comb the development of the new German film and Kluge's personal experience of film making to explain the formation of the critical consciousness in Kluge's film.The second part will analyze the aesthetic part of those films,and then,to compare with Eisenstein's Montage and Guy Debord's Spectacle critiques to find the critical purpose in which is behind the idea,and as a basis to analysis the kind of aesthetics how to shape “Essay Film”.The third part will focus on the analysis of the theory of film and public sphere.To comb the history of the theory of Hannah Arendt and Habermas to introduce the possibility of discuss the new public sphere by using new media film model.In the last chapter,it will return to the historical context of Kluge's early film experience,and sum up the remaining problems of Kluge's film and public sphere.Finally,we will build a relation between Kluge's film and public sphere theory,and make a conclusion.By combing the experience of Alexander Kluge's film practice,it will help to analyze the criticism inside of his films,which will lead to a deep understanding of the concept of Kluge's film.On this basis,I hope to use Kluge's theory of public sphere to compare his films,and try to understand the public sphere of film described by Kluge.Kluge,as a director,is gradually noticed by the Chinese scholars.Meanwhile,Kluge should be discussed and studied as a theorist.On the other hand,with the Chinese film industry developed rapidly,it ignores the attention to film culture,as an important new topic in contemporary western film research,the theory of the film and public sphere should be paid more attention by domestic related academic fields.Alexander Kluge as one of the original author of film and public sphere theory,his research results of the public sphere is worth to discuss.Although there are few research achievements on this topic till now,with the study of Kluge's films in the related fields,it is believed that the theoretical research of Kluge,especially the theory of film and public sphere would be paid more attention,which is the relationship between domestic audiences and scholars on the cultural,historical and social relations of domestic films.It is of great significance for reference.
