English homework is an extension and supplement of English teaching in Junior high school. It is a bridge to connect in-class learning with out-of-class learning. The New Curriculum Standard points out that the students in the stage of receiving compulsory education should acquire a preliminary and comprehensive ability of language use through English learning.English homework is exactly the way to put what is learned into practice. The previous survey during my internship indicates that there are a lot of problems existing in English homework in the junior high school, such as too much homework, boring forms of homework and monotonous ways of homework correcting. In view of these problems, this study attempts to investigate the current situation of English homework in the junior high school. This paper mainly studies the current situation of English homework in a junior high school from the perspective of students and teachers. The subjects were 300 students and18 English teachers in No.1 Middle School of Yan' an New District.Questionnaires and interviews are employed as research instruments. The data in this study are calculated by SPSS.20 software and the descriptive analysis and the single factor variance analysis are conducted.Research results are summarized as follows: 1.From the perspective of students, here is the general situation. The purpose of completing English homework is one-sided,that is,mainly to consolidate knowledge and get higher marks;the content and form of assignments lack diversity and variation;the students have positive attitudes towards homework;the amount of English work is small, but some students spend more time in doing it;the level difficulty varies from person to person;students are seldom involved inthe grading of their own homework and cannot seriously treat and carefully correct errors in their assignments.Secondly,There are significant differences among the three grades. The purpose of the homework is different in grades;in terms of the content and form of homework, students prefer the homework of extracurricular practice and reading;the amount of English homework increased, the difficulty gradually escalated, and the time spent on homework increased with grades increasing;in terms of homework correcting, students in Grade 3 have more chances to correct homework in pairs or on their own.2.From the teacher's points of view, the purpose of assigning homework is not comprehensive. The content and form of English homework is exam-oriented.Forms are mostly in written and can not arouse students' interest.Teachers seldom assign homework of different levels according to students' different English proficiency.Teachers are the main body of evaluating homework, but no new ways of evaluating are used. What is evaluated is not comprehensive and complete enough to evaluate students' overall language ability. In the light of these problems, this study, based on the theory of multiple intelligence and humanism, puts forward some suggestions for improving the quality of English homework in junior high schools: with the New Curriculum Standard as the guide, teachers should change the attitudes towards homework assigning, diversify the types of homework and cultivate students' overall language ability;the level of difficulty in the homework should be stratified based on students' different needs and teachers should develop multidimensional ways of evaluation.
