The Entertainment Effects Of Code-switching In Network Variety Show

With the development of global communication and the continuous language contact all over the world,the phenomenon of code-switching has been more frequently seen in bilingual and multilingual communities.As a common phenomenon of language contact,code-switching has always been valued in many fields since its birth,such as sociology,anthropology and linguistics.As far as linguistics is concerned,many branches of studies have focused on the factors involved in code-switching from the perspective of their own research,such as the sociolinguistics,grammar,psycholinguistics,pragmatics,conversational analysis,etc.,all with remarkable progress.In previous researche of code-switching in our country,most of them focus on the literary studies,and fewer have been made on its application in real conversations.Though in recent years,more and more studies based on the corpus of traditional TV programs have gradually appeared,however,at a time when the Internet prevailed,the code-switching study in the field of network is still limited.Since many network entertainment programs are showing a thriving momentum of development,it is meaningful to explore code-switching in network entertainment programs.Therefore,the author wants to find out what are the main functions of code-switching and how it realizes the entertainment effects in the entertainment program.Besides,it is also hoped to figure out the motivations that influence people to use code-switching as a communicative strategy in such program.Based on Verschueren's Linguistic Adaptation Theory and referring to Yu Guodong's linguistic adaptation model,this thesis studies the code-switching phenomenon in network variety show Let's Talk with a focus on the entertainment effects.Let's Talk is a representative network variety show that has been ranked top on the audience rating list of the program in the same category.By employing the qualitative and descriptive methods,the study collected the code-switching cases occurred in Let's Talk from November 29 th in 2014 to June 17 th in 2017,and then the author conducted a detailed analysis on these cases concerning the functions and entertainment effects realized by code-switching.It finally analyzed the motivations that influence people's use of code-switching in the program.In the final conclusion of this study,the research has found that code-switching employed in the program is regarded as a kind of communicative strategy to mainly achieve people's entertainment purposes.Among all the cases occurred in Let's Talk,a total of nine specific functions of code-switching as the realization of adaptation have been generalized,namely filling lexical and semantic gap,seeking convenience,quotation,expressing implication,emphasizing,pursuing fashion,working as rhetorical devices,expressing affections and showing imitation.Besides,the code-switching cases have all achieved the entertainment effects more or less by realizing the characteristics of entertainment.In the end,the author also found out that people choose to switch their code in the program mainly for the reasons of maintaining their positive social identity,catering for the audience's tastes and bring audience joys and happiness.It is hoped that the findings of the study will be helpful to broaden the study of code-switching,facilitate people's appropriate application of code-switching in their daily life and to provide some enlightenments for language learning.
