A Study On The Omission In The English Translation Of Classical Chinese Poetry From The Perspective Of Impersonal View Of Universal Things

Taoism,as an integral part of Chinese philosophy,holds that due to our limited intelligence and uncontrolled desires,human's attempt to explain the world can only separate it into parts and cover “Dao”,the fundamental spirit of the universe.Thus Taoism believes that we should humble ourselves by deserting our intelligence and desires so that we can perceive the world in impersonal view and return to the situation before the world are not wrongly analyzed by human and the Tao appears as a harmonious whole.The philosophy in Taoism exerts a profound influence on the way Chinese perceive the world and express themselves,also makes a great difference to the poetic language and presentation mode of classical Chinese poetry(CCP)..Wai-lim Yip(???)analyzed the CCP's distinctive aesthetic appeal and its special grammar.He pointed out in the past century,CCP has been contorted in translation.Translations that depart from the Chinese linguistic characteristics allow English to destroy the aesthetic appeal of CCP.These translations totally changed the special mode of presentation,the process from feeling to expression in CCP.Omission is a very typical feature of CCP's language.The language of CCP is very concise,omitting many words that should appear according to grammar.Many translations are inclined to present those omitted words so that the English version can be clear in meaning and right in grammar.However,these translations ignored the special mode of presentation of reality coming from deep-rooted philosophy and the aesthetic appeal made possible by these omissions.This paper intends to research how translators deal with the omission in the English translation of CCP from the perspective of impersonal view of universal things.Wang Wei's thirty poems and their six English versions will serve as a small corpus.Through tagging these linguistic materials,this thesis tries to make a detailed study on the translation of omissions,including the translation methods adopted intranslation and the performance of these translation.First,this paper introduces four categories of omission in CCP,including the 1)omission in adverbials of place,2)the omission in adverbials of time,3)the omission of conjunctions and 4)the omission of subjects.These four omissions reflect four kinds of outlooks in Taoism: outlooks on space,outlooks on time,outlooks on logic and outlooks on subjects.Based on these outlooks,estimation standards of translation come into being.Second,this paper will try to build a small corpus,which can serve as a basis for further analysis.Third,trough quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis,the thesis will conclude the most popular translation methods adopted to deal with the omissions.Detailed analysis will be made to describe the efficiency of each method.Through analysis,this paper tries to,first,conclude several most popular translation methods of omissions and find several feasible and efficient ones from the perspective of impersonal view;second,summary the general situation of the omission in English translation and find out whether the representation of impersonal view has got attention in translation.The author hopes this study can offer a new perspective to and lay some foundations for future studies.
