The source text is Preface and Chapter Two in the book Across the Open Field written by Laurie Olin,in which many complex sentences are used with implied information, posing great challenges to the translator. Thus in this report, the translator focuses on the translation of complex sentences in the source text to help translators better express the logical relations in the translation of English complex sentences and make a good translation.A complex sentence contains one main clause and one or more dependent clauses. Some logical relations in complex sentences are explicit, marked by conjunctions or cohesive devices, while others are implicit.Explicitation, the process of introducing implicit information in the source text into the target one,can be divided into four kinds: obligatory explicitation, optional explicitation, pragmatic explicitation, and translation-inherent explicitation. In translating Across the Open Field, the translator discovers that obligatory explicitation and optional explicitation frequently occur. Thus the translator mainly discusses these two types of explicitation in this report and adopts four main translation devices to achieve the explicitation of logical relations in complex sentences: addition, specification, replacing punctuation marks with conjunctions and splitting and reorganizing. The meaning of the source text is clearer in the translated one via addition;specification can make the information in the source text easier to understand;the third one can clearly present the information in the source text;and splitting and reorganizing can hep readers quickly understand the implicit logical relations in the source text.
