Explicitation Of Logical Relations In E-C Translation Of Complex Sentences

The report is made based on the translation of Decision 16-04-041 of the California Public Utilities Commission(hereinafter referred to as �The Decision�),which discusses the issues,rules and regulations relating to the online-enabled transportation services.As a legal text,The Decision features a large number of complex sentences.A complex sentence consists of only one main clause,but it has one or more subordinate clauses functioning as an element of the sentence.In dealing with complex sentences,logical relations are of great importance in achieving coherence in a discourse.Some logical relations are explicit with discourse markers,while others are implicit.Both of them are discussed in the report.Explicitation can be characterized in general terms as the phenomenon which frequently leads to target text stating source text information in a more explicit form than the original.There are four types of explicitation,including obligatory explicitation,optional explicitation,pragmatic explicitation,and translation-inherent explicitation.In translating The Decision,the translator discovers the first two types of explicitation of logical relations in complex sentences,namely,obligatory explicitation and optional explicitation.For obligatory explicitation,the translator adopts such translation devices as the addition of category words and specification;while for optional explicitation,the addition of connective elements,and division and restructuring are adopted to achieve explicitness of logical relations.
