The source material is taken from the latest tourist guidebook Welcome to Lantian County for Pleasure published by the Shaanxi tourism administration, which contains detailed attraction introductions of many famous scenic spots and folk culture.Whereas, the transition between different languages certainly brings about barriers to translation due to differences in thinking mode and cultural focus, resulting in something that cannot be conveyed well by normal translation methods. The translation of cultural symbols in tourism materials has become a problem that cannot be ignored. There are many untranslatable factors reoccurring in the process of translation. In order to convey the original information and promote cross-cultural communication, all the cultural untranslatability is classified into historical untranslatability and customary untranslatability. In accordance with the three translation principles of Yan Fu,in terms of the untranslatability in the process of translation, four compensation methods are summarized,i.e.transliteration,amplification,substitution,and literal translation with annotation.Among them, for the historically untranslatable factors, the compensation methods of substitution and amplification are mainly used;for the untranslatable factors caused by differences in cultural customs, the compensation methods of transliteration and annotation are mainly adopted. In inter-lingual communication, the untranslatability caused by cultural barriers is absolute, but essentially the untranslatable is relatively translatable. In order to make up for the cultural defaults and resolve the barriers to communication between different cultures, untranslatability can be translated,so as to achieve the goal of cross-cultural communication by adopting practical and effective compensation methods. The translator shall understand and master the cultural differences between the original language and the target language. When translating the source text, proper compensation methods shall be adopted.Only when the original text is fully digested can the information and culture contained in the source text be accurately expressed with the reading habits of target readers,so as to improve the acceptability of the target text.
