The linguistic book The Style and Timbre of English Speech and Literature by Marklen E.Konurbaev--a professor in Moscow State University--falls into the category of academic work,in which many sentences are long and complex.Academic books are generally written in formal language, sentences in them are long and complex as well. Therefore,it is a challenge to deal with those long and complex sentences in translation. This paper focuses on E-C translation of long sentences.Firstly, the English long sentence is defined as the sentence being composed of over 17 words.Secondly, the author analyzes the syntactic structure of the source text and divides the long sentences into four categories: simple long sentences, compound long sentence, complex long sentences and compound complex long sentences.Thirdly, based on previous studies and translation practice, the author puts forward three translation principles of “faithfulness”,“readability” and “relevance” for the translation of long sentences. Finally, this paper summarizes the methods of translating four different categories of long sentences and E-C translating strategies. In order to realize the value of academic communication, different translation strategies should be adopted for different types of long sentences.Through combining translation practice and the guidance of the three translation principles, this paper proposes four translation strategies: Firstly, linear translation or reordering translation is employed in the translation of simple long sentences;Secondly, compound long sentences are translated with splitting strategy;Thirdly, the translation of complex long sentences is carried out by using the strategies of inverse translation or linear translation;Fourthly, combined strategies of splitting, inverse or reordering are adopted in the translation of compound complex long sentences. Finally, the translation experience, lessons and problems to be solved are summarized through the translation practice. The purpose is to provide some practical guidance for relevant scholars and to provide some reference for translators who translate such texts in the future.
