This is a report on the translation of Chapter 2 of The Constitutional Systems of the Australia States and Territories,a book written by Gerard Carney,a legal professor from Bond University in Australia, which introduces the constitutional system of Australian states and territories.Chapter 2 of this book focuses on the constitutional evolution of the Australian states. This report makes a brief analysis of the source text, describes the translation process, expounds the significance of the translation report, and discusses the way to deal with two typical problems in translation of legal academic works: translation of long sentences and translation of conjunctions. With regard to long sentence translation, the report describes the translation process in detail, and proposes three translation skills: division, inversion and synthesis. As for the translation of conjunctions, the report first discusses the classification of conjunctions within the framework proposed by Halliday and Hasan and proposes the translation skills of omission, retention and addition. This report aims to summarize the translation practice and propose efficient translation skills for the translation of long sentences and conjunctions in legal academic works,so as to provide some references for the translation of similar texts.
