Nowadays, as China is becoming increasingly intertwined with the rest of the world, translation has acquired an importance unseen before both in content and extent. Apart from its traditional areas, such as literature and practical writings, the activity of translation is also urgently needed in other fields, among which academic works is a manifest member. Academic works, with their unique characteristics, enjoys a special status in social interaction and world communication. They, by providing the latest result of concerted research efforts, facilitate academic interaction, provide insight into subjects already known or unknown, set a standard for people to perform their duties or daily activities and, resultantly, improve people's lives and health. Against this backdrop,it is of necessity, or at least of certain value, to delve into the translating of academic works. In current works of translation study, academic works are treated as a kind of scientific text. For fresh learners of translation or who are struggling to become proficient as translators, translating scientific texts, with their complex syntactic structure and unusually long, twisted sentences, presents daunting difficulties, and it is hardly less so in the case of translating academic works, which probably many of our students may have found demanding even in the act of reading. In this report, the translating of long sentences in academic works will be singled out among other hard-to-crack points in the process of translation and discussed in such a way as attempting to develop a systematic and effective way of translating long sentences that is different from those that have been developed by previous studies. In addition, the lexical, sentential and textual features of the text in question will also be touched upon by the present writer according to his hand-on experience. This research will be based on a comparative study of English and Chinese languages. Thus, research outcomes in this respect, particularly on the syntactic level, concluded by former experts and researchers will be constantly resorted to throughout. This thus suggests that the present writer will be trying to make a research that is conducive to producing target-language- or target-reader-oriented translation. This report is composed of five parts. After a brief introduction to the task in the first part, the translation process of the task will be detailed out in the following chapter. The third chapter is about the discussion of the translation on the syntactic level, in which a comparative study will be carried out. The fourth chapter is where the theory and practice converge. And then a conclusion will be made to bring this report to an end.
