A Study On Overseas Chinese Of Fuqing Origin In Japan And The Society Of Their Hometown Since 1978

Fuqing city,Fujian Province,is one of hometowns of overseas Chinese in China with a long history.With the promulgation of the policy of reform and opening up in1970 s,China has relaxed the restriction on citizens going abroad for private reasons.More and more people from Fuqing City are going abroad,forming a new trend of going abroad.According to related data,there are up to 400,000 overseas Chinese from Fuqing who have migrated abroad,accounting of nearly half of overseas Chinese and compatriots in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Macau Special Administrative Region throughout Fuqing City.Amongst others,overseas Chinese in Japan from Fuqing takes the greatest share,numbering 100,000.Hence,this article takes overseas Chinese in Japan from Fuqing City as the subject,and analyzes overseas Chinese in Japan from Fuqing City since 1978 as well as social changes in the hometown of overseas Chinese from Fuqing arising herefrom based on access to related historical literature and in combination with field survey.Results of this article show that overseas Chinese in Japan from Fuqing City is not only affected by the natural,historical and social environments in Fuqing City,but also affects the society of Fuqing City to certain extent.On one hand,subject to local economic and production activities,people of Fuqing have to seek a livelihood by going outside.In the meantime,with supports from Japan in policy,economy and historical and cultural background,a lot of people from Fuqing City have been attracted to Japan.On the whole currently,subject to multiple factors including limited education background,difficulty in language communication,illegal visa procedure,strict control of work time,most overseas Chinese from Fuqing City are still encountered with serious challenges in terms of living conditions with small survival space.On the other,though living abroad,these overseas Chinese in Japan always think of their hometown.They have been keeping close association with their hometown through input of various social resources,thereby bringing both new opportunities and challenges to the society of Fuqing,the hometown of overseas Chinese in Japan.
