Language and culture are correlated, which gives rise to culture-related problems in translation. In the case of translating Finnish works into Chinese,in particular, the author encounters with Finnish extra-linguistic cultural elements that the Chinese audience is not familiar with.In this thesis, the author explores culture-related translation strategies in the translation of the Finnish text Under Glass: A Life with Asperger syndrome and selects specific examples of the source text for detailed analysis. This thesis is based on the translation of Chapters 1 to 15 of Under Glass(about 37403 Chinese characters),written by the Finnish female scientist Saila Seppo. As non-fiction,the book not only includes facts and stories about different aspects of the Finnish culture, society, parenting style and educational system, but also sheds light on a disorder called Asperger syndrome that is rarely heard about among ordinary people in China. There are five chapters in this thesis: Introduction,Material Description,Theoretical Framework,Results and Analysis, and Summary and Discussion. In the Theoretical Framework, the author will introduce some relevant culture-bound translation theories and strategies, namely Realia and ECRs,and elaborate on the choice of strategies used in this thesis. In the Results and Analysis, specific examples will be selected from the TT for analysis. In the Summary and Conclusion,a brief summary of the whole thesis is done and possibilities of further research are investigated.
