This is a report on the English-Chinese translation of the introduction and the first part of College(Un)bound,a book about American higher education written by Jeffrey J.Selingo, who is a former editor at large for the Chronicle of Higher Education-the authoritative journal on higher education in America.American higher education has always been the envy of the world whereas the author turns a critical eye on it and analyses its true nature. He reveals the undesirable truth of American higher education system and explains why it gets into trouble historically. In this project, the translator first defines the source text as informative text based on Peter Newark's text typology, and then adopts Peter Newark's communicative translation as guidance in translation. The main part of the project pinpoints difficulties in translation from three perspectives:difficult words, difficult sentences and culture-loaded items and explores corresponding translation skills, with an aim to achieve the optimum communication effect for the target readers. It is intended that this report can provide reference for others in translating such similar subject, and supply information for higher education related institutions, university leaders and people alike who are interested in American higher education.
