This is a translation report on the first two chapters of Paper Daughter: A Memoir, written by M.Elaine Mar who is one of the outstanding contemporary Chinese American female writers. As the beginning part of an autobiographical novel,Chapter One and Chapter Two depict the growth experiences of M.Elaine Mar as a young immigrant girl from Hongkong to America. It presents the historical background when Chinese traditional culture meets the challenge of American identity, and discloses the tough life of female Chinese Americans.Based on Peter Newmark's Semantic and Communicative Translation Theory, this report gives an overall analysis on the translation practice. The whole report is divided into four parts: chapter one is a description of the translation task, including the background information, analysis of the source text and significance of the translation task;chapter two is a description of the translation process, comprising comprehension, expression and proofreading;chapter three is an analysis of translation cases, which mainly focuses on semantic and communicative translation theory applied in specific cases, namely Cantonese word, syntax and culture-loaded terms from the perspective of semantic translation, and diction, kinship terms as well as conversation from the perspective of communicative translation;chapter four is the conclusion, covering reflections from the translation practice, and some thinking of the unsolved problems.
