As the world is becoming more and more globalized, interpersonal communications are becoming more and more frequent where translation has acted as a more and more important tool.Translation activities must be guided by translation theories and many researchers have put much emphasis on theoretical studies. So the translation of theoretical studies in this field will be a useful reference and propulsion for researchers and translators in China to have a deep understanding of western translation theories. In this practice report, the source text of the translation is the excerpted three chapters of Western Translation Theory: From Herodotus to Nietzsche written by Douglas Robinson, which mainly introduces 90 translators' life experiences and their translation thoughts from mid-5th century BC to the end of 19 th century. These three chapters introduce three translators—Abraham Cowley,Pierre Daniel Huet and Katherine Philips from 1610 s to 1720 s.And in these three chapters, syntactic and cultural features are displayed, which cause many difficulties to the translator's translation practice. This report is guided by Toury's descriptive translation studies(DTS)and analyzed the preliminary norms, initial norms and operational norms this translation process follows. As the core of DTS is to compare the textual information and pragmatic function of the ST and TT and make an equivalent replacement during the translation, with which these norms must be in accordance with, the translator has applied preliminary norms,in this case consulting reference books and transliteration;initial norms,in this case language shifts and paraphrasing;and operational norms,in this case syntactic omission, segmentation and relocation,to cope with the difficulties during the translation process.
