The Effect Of Extralinguistic Knowledge On The Dilivery Of Consecutive Interpretation

When providing services to clients from the different background,interpreters often need relevant background knowledge to help understand what speakers mean,rendering the better interpretation delivery possible.Drawing on Daniel Glie's comprehension equation,extra-linguistic knowledge can facilitate interpreters' analysis and the understanding of the source language.This thesis analyzes an English-to-Mandarin consecutive interpreting task,the 481 st Meeting of The Economic Club of New York.The speaker is Peter Thiel.The thesis focuses on finding out how inadequate extra-linguistic knowledge negatively affects the interpretation delivery.Meanwhile,it also provides some guidelines and suggestions for other learners to tackle the negative effect.Based on previous researches and the case study,the thesis gauges the interpretation delivery from two aspects: information(message accuracy and completeness)and the quality of rendering(improper pauses,verbal fillers,inadequate deverbalize).The examples in the case study also grouped by these two aspects for readers' convenience.The analysis of all examples in the case implicates that there are some strategies and be adopted to help interpreters cope with the negative effect.Through allocating cognitive resources properly,interpreters can assure better interpretation delivery with the use of strategy: pay more attention to the structure of the speech,speaker's conclusions and opinions,and ignore the incompatible information which makes listeners confuse,or the interpretation delivery will be affected.
