This is a translation report for The Goldfinch, written by American women writer Donna Tartt, which has won the Pulitzer Prize because of unique language, vivid characters in 2014.During the translation process, the translator takes the Functional Equivalence Theory as the guiding principle, discussing the translation at the word level, the sentence level and the text level. This theory focuses on the readers' response which requires the translator to put many factors into consideration to satisfy the readers' expectation horizon.Meanwhile, the translator applies various translation techniques in order to achieve the functional equivalence between the target text and the source text as much as possible, including conversion, separation and combination of sentences, adjustment of words order, etc. From the perspective of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, the translator not only complements the missing information in the process of cultural communication but also touches upon cultural ideology instead of paying attention to the translation of information and linguistic skills.Meanwhile, from the aspect of readers' acceptance, the application of functional equivalence contributes to the process of breaking down barriers between Chinese and Western cultures, understanding the writer's intention and improving the status of translators and translated works.
