In recent years, more and more outstanding foreign literary works have entered the Chinese market, and Chinese translation of documentary literature still occupies the main position in these translated works.Taking Evidence of Poverty and Profit in the American City as an example under the guidance of Eugene Nida 's theory of functional equivalence, this article mainly discusses the application of functional equivalence theory in the translation of the excerpts. The genre of the article belongs to documentary literature.Documentary literature is a kind of literary genre with the characteristics of "documentary" and "literary",which based on people and events in real life, and is presented through literary expression. The successful translation version of documentary literary emphasizes that the translation should focus on the readers and use the original text as the medium during the transaltion process. The purpose makes readers acquire the feeling of aesthetic in the process of reading. This article uses the translation of American literary works Evicted Poverty and Profit in the American City as a translation practice through Nida's functional equivalence theory and combined with the key difficulties in translation practice,it discusses application of documentary practice. In order to have a qualitative standard for the transformation between source language and target language, and also because the traditional translation theory is different,Nida?s functional equivalence theory provides a standard of translation criticism from a different perspective. To get the ideal translation,we must find the most natural and closest translation to the original language, rather than rigidly adhere to the simple and formal equivalence.Nida states that "translation is the way of showing original language",which means we must use the most appropriate, natural and reciprocal language to transform the source language in proper style.” That is to say,Nida's definition of translation indicates that translation is not only semantic equivalence, but also focuses on stylistic equivalence. Therefore, the practice report starts from the two aspects of semantic equivalence and stylistic equivalence, and analyzed the application of documentary literary translation on the guidance of functional equivalence. But at the same time,it is because the plot of documentary literature is abundant, and sometimes step-by-step translation can be hardly achieved. Therefore, the report aims at the guiding role of functional equivalence in documentary literature to discover deficiencies in translation and summarizes experience. Finally,it makes some suggestions for translation studies and research in the future.
