Functional equivalence is a relationship between two texts in different languages, rather than between the languages themselves. The aim of this paper is to display the application of functional equivalence theory in the translation of “Meeting the Unknown Self”.The thesis, from the perspective of functional equivalence, and the priority of dynamic equivalence over formal equivalence, explores the strategy of expressive text translation at both macro and micro levels. The employment of translation strategies-amplification,omission as well as the application of shifts, under the guidance of Functional Equivalence theory can help to reproduce the original message and achieve the equivalence with the source text to ta maximum degree.By taking examples and presenting practical strategies guided by Functional Equivalence theory, this paper aims to provide valuable suggestions for translators to improve the quality of their works.
