Strategies Of Novel Translation From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

This is a translation report for Indignation,an English novel written by Philip Roth,which is set in the U.S.during Korean War.It tells a story that the protagonist Markus,under the shackles of family,school and society,gradually grows mature and rises up,but eventually to the end of his life.This novel is elaborate in description and subtle in expression.Long sentences,especially those connected by dashes,and compound sentences are in the majority.According to the linguistic features of the text,under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,the author analyzes examples from the perspective of lexical level,syntactic level and other respects.In terms of presenting lexical meanings,literal translation and free translation have been adopted by the author to deal with the commonly accepted vocabulary in China and the vocabulary involving cultural backgrounds in order to help the target readers better understand the meaning of source text.At syntactic level,restructuring,division and conversion strategies have been adopted by the author,with carefully analysis of the sentence structure of the source text,combining the differences in the expression habits and word order of the English and Chinese languages,to meet the target reader's reading habits.In other respects,the author analyzes the cultural background and the character of the novel from a macro perspective,so that the translation is in line with the personalities of the character.This report aims to explore the strategies of novel translation,strive to make the translation clear and natural,meet the expression habits of the translated language,taking care of the reading experience of target readers,so as to achieve the effect of functional equivalence.
