A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Visitor

English and Chinese belong to different language families,which are characterized by the different syntactic structures.Particularly,attributive clauses are commonly used in the English text and they are so complicated and difficult that translators have no idea as to how to translate them.Functional equivalence theory was raised by Eugene A.Nida in the 1960 s.It tells people that the balance or equilibrium between the source text and target text is one of the most important standards to judge a translation.Based on the functional equivalence theory advocated by Nida,this report is devoted to analyzing the translation of attributive clauses in Marisa Silver's short story The Visitor.The translation does not seek the literally rigid unanimousness of the surface of the source text,but attempts to realize functional equivalence between the two languages.The translator applied this theory to practice—the translator employed different translation techniques to deal with different attributive clauses such as pre-positioning,post-positioning and the transformation from attributive clauses to adverbial clauses.The whole report is divided into five parts.In chapter one,the report describes the background of the task,the reason for choosing this text,and a brief introduction of the source text and its author.Next,in chapter two,this report narrates the three procedures of translation,including preparation for translation,process of translation and proofreading for translation respectively.Then,chapter three introduces the functional equivalence theory and its influence on the translation of attributive clauses.Furthermore,chapter four is the core part of this report,which analyzes the methods to translate the attributive clauses under the guidance of functional equivalence theory.Lastly,chapter five is the conclusion part,which summarizes the problems in the process of translation and introduces the solutions to solve these problems.Based on a new source text,this report further explores the functional equivalence theory.Hopefully,the report can make some suggestions and inspirations to translation practice to some degree.
