Modern Poetry and the Idea of Language: A Critical and Historical Study is an important critical treatise on the language of modern poetry written by Gerald L.Burns.The translation practice selected in this report is the third chapter of this book, which mainly discusses the formalist theory of language.Based on the principle of functional equivalence, this paper studies the translation of literary criticism writings with practical examples. At the lexical level,it is believed that the translation of specific words should take their contextual meaning as the basis, and thereon make necessary and flexible changes so as to better fulfill the informative and argumentative function. The methods such as conversion and extension are exemplified in this section. At the syntactic level,on the premise of not losing the logic of the original text and conforming to the language habit of the target language, the methods of sequence inversion and structure recasting are selected to achieve the equivalence in logic. At the stylistic level, for the quotations the author extracted from different works, the translator advocates that the translation reflect the style of the cited work and thus arouse similar reading effect among the target language readers.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory, this thesis analyzes the translation from three aspects, namely, lexicon, syntax and style, and shows the applicability of functional equivalence theory in the translation of academic writings. Those specific translation strategies may also provide certain reference value for the translation of texts of the same type.
