A Report On The Translation Of The Image-Text Materials In Garment Design Documents

In today's image reading age,there is more and more information in a image-text mode,which increases the translation demand of such kind of documents,especially scientific and technological materials containing both images and texts.The translator's job is to translate the texts,but it has to be admitted that there exists the interdependence between the two modes.Thus the translator may have to refer to images for better understanding of the texts,or refer to texts for better understanding of the images.The report is about the translation of FLYERS GROUP garment design documents.Different from common design documents,the original English materials,with their texts in the form of little text,contain texts and images,including garment information,garment spec,the suggestions of proto and sales samples as well as test reports,most of which are image-text materials.According to the concept little text made by Halliday and by analyzing the texts and images with the help of the grammar of visual design established by Kress and van Leeuwen and industrial experience,the report explores appropriate translation techniques of conversion,amplification,specification,ellipsis and paying attention to the layout of translations for a better translation.It is found that firstly,sometimes the translator needs to change the original speech in the translation because of the little text's special grammar and distribution.The conceptual process in the visual grammar helps to give suggestions of translating "little text." Secondly,amplification shall be used under the guide of the "contact" of interaction.Thirdly,because of the "salience" of composition and terminology,the translator should apply specification during the translation process.Fourthly,images can express things independently,which leads to the translation technique of ellipsis in colors and simplifying content.Fifthly,as the texts besides images can be seen as visual images for the viewer,the translator needs to adapt the layout of the translation with the help of the information value.The study is quite significant in that the translation techniques are concluded specifically for image-text translation,providing reference for similar documents.
