Biography belongs to the literary text, and literary translation plays an important role in the cultural exchanges between China and the Western countries. The report is based on the translation of the biographical text,Albert Schweitzer A Biography, written by Nils Ole Oermann. The text details the life experiences and contributions of Albert Schweitzer. The report mainly focuses on the translation strategies of the complex sentences with multiple modifiers under the guidance of the Newmark's communicative translation theory.Communicative translation emphasizes the feelings and reactions of readers of the target language, which holds the idea that translators are able to get rid of the original form.Moreover,word-for-word translation is not advocated for the sake of the readability and acceptability of the translation. The complex sentences in the text contain multiple types of modifiers and complicated logical relationship.Under the guidance of communicative translation theory, the translator emphasizes the acceptability of translation and analyzes the translation strategies of the complex sentences regarding Chinese readers as the center.Structure of the complex sentences is changed and adjusted. In order to ensure readability of the translation, the translator uses some translation strategies, including division, sequence adjustment, addition and turning phrases into clauses.
