Percival Lowell is a well-known American astronomer and writer. This thesis is based on the communicative translation theory of Newmark and on the case of The Soul of the Far East--a book about Japanese psychology, religion, and behavior and wrote when Percival Lowell lived in Japan. As English complex sentences appear in higher frequency, the translation of these complex sentences becomes one of the most difficult parts during the translation of the text. Because Newmark’s communicative translation theory emphasizes to make the target readers to get the effect as close as possible to the original readers and contributes a lot to the translation, the writer applied Newmark’s communicative translation theory as a guidance and divided complex sentences in the text into three basic types(compound sentence, complex sentence and compound complex sentence)with a focused research on the translation principle and methods of each type of complex sentences such as linear translation, inverse translation, dividing, splitting and comprehensive translation.Based on the analysis of the text, the writer brings forward the relevant translation methods on the basis of communicative translation, wishing to offer some references to such kind of text translation.
