A Report On C-E Translation Of Bureaucracy In China(Excerpt)

Non-literary translation occupies an absolute percentage in modern translation practice.Compared with literary translation,non-literary translation covers a wider range of fields,including politics,economy,law,culture,science and technology,and social life.In the world today,the process of globalization is accelerating,and cross-cultural exchanges are becoming more and more frequent.Non-literary translation has played a significant role in promoting social development.However,there has always been a tendency of "literature first" in the academic field.Non-literary translation seems to have not received the attention it deserves.This also makes the development of non-literary translation slightly lag behind.By carefully studying the non-literary translation and the relevant literature of political theories,the author finds that the Functional Equivalence Theory from Eugene A.Nida can well assist and offer guidance to the practice of non-literary translation,so decides to choose it as the theoretical basis.This task is one of the sub-projects of the Chinese-English translation project Bureaucracy in China.As a member of the project group,the author undertakes the translation of Chapters 1-3 and the preface.Based on the Functional Equivalence Theory and feasible translation techniques and strategies,the author carefully read the source texts and explores the way of reproducing the original meaning and style of non-literary translation in the process of practice.The report is divided into four chapters.The first chapter briefly introduces the translation task,including the definition and characteristics of non-literary translation,and the text of Bureaucracy in China.The second chapter details the translation practice process,including pre-translation,in-translation,and post-translation works.The author introduces the building process and function of the Glossary in this Chapter.The third chapter is the main part of this report.It collects and analyzes typical translation examples from this practice on lexical and syntactical levels to explain the translation strategies under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory.It also includes the translation strategies of references,especially classical Chinese references.The fourth chapter summarizes the major findings and limitations of this translation practice in order to provide practical reference for the strategies and techniques of non-literary translation.
