Lexicalization And Grammaticalization Of “Jieguo”

Lexicalization and grammaticalization are one of the important contents in the study of Chinese grammar and an important law in the development of Chinese language.Studying the Lexicalization and Grammaticalization of “jieguo”,not only can help us realize the historical evolution of “jieguo”,explore the motivation and mechanism of the evolution of “jieguo”,reveal the general rules of Lexicalization and Grammaticalization of Chinese,but also reveal the characteristics of the use of “jieguo” after it evolves into conjunctions,such as marking unexpected functions.Through qualitative and quantitative analysis and classification of corpus,this paper comprehensively describes the evolution,motivation and mechanism of“jieguo” and the particularity of conjunctions “jieguo”.The article is mainly divided into four parts.The introduction introduces the current research status of grammaticalization at home and abroad,the current research status of scholars on the word “jieguo”,as well as the research object,research purpose and significance,and the theory and method of application.The first chapter describes the evolution of “jieguo”,including the lexicalization and grammaticalization of “jieguo”.The second chapter analyses the motivation and mechanism that influence and restrict the grammaticalization of “jieguo”,and the general rules in the process of grammaticalization of“jieguo”.The third chapter discusses the unexpected function of the conjunction “jieguo”marker.In the process of research,the metaphorical mechanism runs through the whole process of “jieguo” from the verb-object phrase to the lexicalization of nouns and from the noun to the grammaticalization of conjunctions.In this process,the part of speech and meaning of“jieguo” have changed,and the evolution process is a continuum of gradual changes.We believe that the lexicalization of “jieguo” took place from the tang dynasty to the yuan dynasty,and then grammaticalization occurred after the usage of nouns became stable,that is to say,it gradually became a conjunction in the Ming and qing dynasties.In the process of grammaticalization,“jieguo” is not only influenced by syntactic position,semantics and pragmatics,but also by metaphor,pragmatic inference,analogy and reanalysis.Syntacticposition,semantics and pragmatics are also the important basis for judging the part of speech of “jieguo”,which decide “jieguo” ownership of grammaticalization process which stage the main basis.At the same time,the grammaticalization of “jieguo” reflects the universal law of Chinese grammar: the principle of preservation,the principle of degrading,the principle of lagging behind,the principle of frequency,the principle of gradual change and the principle of unidirectionality.In addition,after the “jieguo” is grammatically transformed into a conjunction,it has a unique characteristic different from other conjunctions.The conjunction“jieguo” has the same referential relationship with the ending in the latter clause,which is used to emphasize "what is the ‘jieguo'”,to attract the attention of the listener,and often marks the unexpected ending,highlighting the abnormality of the ending and expressing the speaker's unexpected subjective feelings.
