The Status Quo Of Chinese Realistic Documentaries In International Communication(2012-2017)

The year of 2012,the milestone in Chinese documentaries' history,has witnessed its rapid growth afterthe release of polices.Among all the genres,Chinese realistic documentariespreferred by international film festivals depict the vivid pictures of Chinese society and closely relate to social problems,making effects in gaining international discourse power via public opinions shaping and agendasetting.Therefore,this dissertation selected 36 Chinese realistic documentaries which were rewarded or exhibited atoverseas film festivals from 2012 to 2017 as the research objects.And then three questions were proposed:What's the status quo of Chinese realistic documentaries at the international communication level?What obstacles do they confront in the course of international communication?How to solve these difficulties?In analyzing the communication power of Chinese realistic documentaries,this article consists two parts of studies:the status quo of Chinese realistic documentariesatoverseas film festivals,or offline performance,and the evaluation of Chinese realistic documentaries' international communication effects amid network environment,or online performance.In the first part,this article based on the analysis of international film festivals,investigating the samples in the perspectives of annual number,districts coverage,genres and productions.In the second part,according to the previous studies,this article employed an evaluation framework to analyze the international communication power of the samples in the network environment.Five main dimensions for evaluation were introduced as:audio-visual data,social media performance,search engine index,foreign media reports and professional ratings.Each dimension was further subdivided into more specific ratings.The results showed that the current communication power of Chinese realistic documentaries remained to be improved,for the shortage of talents,the discordance of opinion expression between "the official" and "the unofficial",cross-cultural communication difficulties and the weakness of online international communication power.Ultimately,the article developed constructive strategies which would be helpful for Chinese realistic documentaries to improve its international communication power.This article proposed an evaluation system,which could theoretically supplement the current international communication research theories.Practically,this article explored the possible paths of international communication improvement,setting examples for other Chinese realistic documentaries' international communication practices.
