English reading runs through the whole process of English learning.It is an important way for students to learn English language knowledge,understand British and American culture and enhance their own cultural connotations.Therefore,the teaching of English reading undoubtedly becomes the most important part of English teaching.Most of the traditional English reading teaching still adopts the teacher-centered and grammar-focused reading teaching model,but it faces such problems as dull classroom atmosphere,low students' interest in reading,low class participation,and difficulty in improving students' reading performance.Therefore,how to teach has always been a major problem for educators.Many scholars have devoted themselves to the study of unique reading theories and English reading teaching models in order to change the traditional classroom teaching model.In 1998,Jeremy Hammer,a British educator,first proposed ESA model in How to Teach English,which injected new vitality into the reform of English teaching model.Meanwhile,the research on ESA model has been increasing.Based on constructivism,schema theory and motivation theory,this study combines qualitative research with quantitative research,and carries out empirical research on ESA teaching model applied in senior high school English reading through questionnaire survey,interview and pre-test and post-test,with a view to further exploring the empirical significance of this model and its implications of effectiveness and feasibility in practical reading teaching.In this study,131 students from Class One,Three and Four of a key middle school of Harbin were selected as subjects,which were divided into experimental class and control class.In the experimental class,Hammer's ESA teaching model was used,and the traditional teaching model was used in the control class.After 16 weeks of teaching experiment,data collection,analysis and comparison were carried out on the questionnaire survey and the test scores before and after reading comprehension.SPSS22.0 is used for data analysis.The results show that the application of ESA teaching model can help students to improve their reading interest and classroom participation,and effectively promote students to master Englishreading strategies so as to further improve their English reading performance.In addition,from the perspective of practical teaching,the author puts forward some suggestions and teaching inspiration on how English teachers can better use ESA teaching model in future classroom teaching,which can provide reference for teachers' classroom teaching.
