Serge N.Usoff's Colloquial Chinese was one of the influential textbooks in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages during the first part of the 20 th century. However, there is little research into this book and no research could not be found about this book from the perspective of textbook compilation. The present thesis aims to analyze and discuss how this textbook reflects the main principles and theories of textbook compilation from various aspects, such as the principles of practice, communication, knowledge, interest, science and pertinence for textbook compilation for teaching Chinese as a foreign language,in combination with the Chinese and English versions of Colloquial Chinese. This thesis also focuses on the method of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages reflected in this textbook. It is our hope that the results of the study can be used for reference in the compilation of teaching materials for the program of Teaching Chinese as a foreign language in the future.
