Walking marriage,a kind of unique marriage culture system, prevails in the Mosuo people,a branch of the Naxi ethnic group in the southwestern part of China.Walking marriage, instead of indicating the casual sexual union and family bond that outsiders think of,refers to the phenomenon that the man went to the woman's house at nightfall and left the next morning, thereby forming the unique marriage style of Mosuo people.Even more, the two are only emotionally connected, without being limited by concepts of personal property or family status, and their children are owned by the female family.Besides, the two get married freely and break up easily. Therefore, this marriage system is called “living fossil of ancient human family marriage” by scholars. In addition,in the Mosuo society, the extended family composed of matrilineal lineage serves as an important part in the whole society, with women as the authority and main body of the family, and with the oldest grandmother who is usually the most capable woman, just and prestigious female member of the family as the most senior member of the family, known as Dabu.In a big matriarchal family, everyone performs his own functions and works according to one's ability. This thesis is a Chinese-English translation practice report on the marriage and family of Mosuo People. The original text of the translation report was selected from the chapter 20 of the book Mosuo People in China written by He Shaoquan in June 2017.This chapter, divided into eight parts, aims to make readers understand the characteristics of Mosuo matriarchal culture and the custom of walking marriage. The process of translation is completed under the guidance of Newmark's communicative translation theory in which,in terms of the analysis of the theory of language function, the text is divided into informative text, expressive text and vocative text.Because the translated text is informative type, the translator makes a case analysis from the perspective of vocabulary, syntax and culture. This translation report is mainly divided into five parts: the first part is a brief introduction of the text content, author, purpose and significance of the translation;the second part elaborates the translation process, followed by the introduction of guiding theory and application in the third part;the fourth part focuses on the difficulties in translation, the translation strategies and methods used in the thesis, ending up with the translator's summary of the gains and shortcomings in the translation process in the fifth part.
