Abstract/Summary:
This thesis is a translation report on China Mission: A Personal History from the Last Imperial Dynasty to the People’s Republic(chapters 32 to 35).The selected source text is about the Chester Ronning family’s journey from Canada back to China. The book was awarded the Prose Award by the Association of American Publishers and published by the Louisiana State University Press. It is a vivid story about personal faith and determination.Through the eyes of the Ronning family, readers can not only learn about the thrilling experience of the three generations of the family in China but also can learn knowledge about China’s social changes, cultural customs, religious beliefs and aesthetic aspects. The translator completed the project according to the theories of Peter Newmark. In the theory of text types, the classification of text types of the source text is not absolute, and each type of text does not exist separately.A kind of text can have three functions but the emphasis is different.Specifically,China Mission is an autobiography,so it contains a great deal of expressive text to deliver the author’s feelings and thoughts. The book tells much about China’s history based on the author’s experience.Such historical records about China are the informative text.Furthermore,it also includes signs, slogans and speeches by the political leaders, which belong to the vocative text. The translator also completed the project under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation theory by Peter Newmark.Semantic translation is to reproduce the meaning of the source text within the range of sentence and structure of the second language while communicative translation is to deliver as much as possible to the target readers the similar effect felt by the source text readers.Accordingly, different concrete translation methods based on different text types are applied.Repetition, transliteration and linear translation are applied under the direction of semantic translation;conversion, back translation and reinventing sentence structures are used under the direction of communicative translation. This translation project has certain practical and research significance. On the one hand, with the acceleration of globalization and the increasing strength of China in economic, political and cultural fields,China is attracting the attention of the whole world. This project will provide a valuable reference for related studies on China. On the other hand, the project is the translation of a autobiography, which can provide a references for similar translation practices in terms of translation strategies and techniques.
