A Translation Report Of Hydac Fluid Level Gauge & Siemens Low-Voltage Motors Compact Operating Instructions From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Foreign mechanical product manuals,for technical staffs weak in English,are difficult to understand,read and use.Therefore,translating such texts will provide necessary assistance for them to know more about mechanical properties and how to properly operate machines.Based on an excerpted English-Chinese translation of HYDAC Fluid Level Gauge and SIEMENS Low-voltage Motors Compact Operating Instructions(approximately 10000-word)which was finished during the internship,this report aims to discuss the problems confronted in the translation process and the corresponding solutions under the guidance of the translation theory.On the lexical level,there are many technical words and abbreviations in the source text.On the syntactical level,there are many imperative sentences,passive sentences,complex sentences and impersonal expressions.Given these characteristics,the translator adopted literal translation,zero translation and other translation methods on lexical level,and conversion and restructuring and ellipsis on syntactical level,in an attempt to produce a smooth and natural target text and evoke the same reaction from the target readers as that of the source text readers.
