A Study Of The Urban Life Of The Scholars In Tang Dynasty

The main theme of this paper is based on the TaiPing GuangJi as the main material,to explore the urban life of the scholars in the Tang Dynasty.The study of three perspectives are gardens,temples and brothel which to show the elegant life style,enterprising open-minded outlook on life and the colorful culture under international communication of the scholars in Tang Dynasty.The cities in Tang Dynasty were developing very rapidly.Under this circumstance,the citizen culture emerged gradually,which promoted the development and prosperity of the novels in Tang Dynasty.In TaiPing GuangJi,The novels of the scholars are the main part.Not only the main writers are the scholars,but the the audience and audience are also the scholars,and the places where the story happened are almost in the cities.Therefore,City-People-Novel is set up.This paper is divided into three parts to analyze the urban life of the scholars in Tang Dynasty.The first part is about the gardens.The gardens play an important role in the cities' space which became the arena and spiritual sustenance of the scholars.And with the change of scholars' ethos,the gardens' decoration was also changed,the meaning of the gardens,too.The second part is about the temples.There were lots of temples in the cities of Tang Dynasty,from Chang'an to all over the country.The temples had become an important activity space for the scholars.And the activities of scholars in the temples are more secular than religious.This change was related to the buddhism's secularization in the Tang Dynasty.The third past is about the brothel.The scholars in Tang Dynasty were the main consumers of the he brothel.For them,it is not only a space for spending money or having fun,but also the source of creative inspiration where came from.Through the above content,There is a very closely connection among the TaiPing GuangJi,the scholars and Tang cities.And from the stories where happened in the gardens,temples and brothel of the scholars in the TaiPing GuangJi,it shows thatthe unique urban lifestyle of the scholars in Tang Dynasty,but this lifestyle has become a typical model of the urban life of the scholars in ancient China.
