In recent years, with the increasing spiritual needs of people, the construction of cinemas in our country has been accelerated and the film industry has developed rapidly. However, with the rapid development, the film industry is facing serious problems such as unbalanced regional development, inaccurate regional positioning, unequal demand and supply, and very low return on cinema lines.High-risk phenomena of investment frequently occur, and the film industry falls into the stage of blind development. As the main revenue of the film industry, film box office has been highly concerned by multidisciplinary experts and international research institutions.Based on the relevant data of 298 cities at prefecture level and above released by Yien Data Think Tank from 2012 to 2015 and the statistical yearbook of Chinese cities, this study calculates the comprehensive box office index of Chinese films, uses spatial analysis and multiple linear regression method to analyze the regional differences of box office at provincial and municipal levels, and explores the influencing factors in order to accurately grasp the film needs of different cities. To seek the characteristics of consumption and put forward the direction and strategy of optimizing the development of film box office. The research results can enrich the research contents and methods of consumer geography, guide the rational development of movie box office in different regions, and provide scientific basis for the formulation of social and economic development policies by the state and local governments. This study consists of four parts:The first part combs the domestic and foreign film box office research and finds that the research content is expanding and deepening, but the research on the spatial differentiation and influencing factors of urban film box office is still insufficient, lacking the cross-research and exploration of cinematology and geography, and the law of the spatial differentiation of movie box office needs to be further explored. This paper scientifically defines the concepts of film industry, box office and various cities, and expounds the supporting role of location theory, spatial economics and economic growth theory in film box office research. The second part mainly analyses the space-time evolution of box office. From the three aspects of supply, demand and benefit, the paper calculates the comprehensive index of 298 cities' movie box office in China, and analyses the regional differences between provincial and municipal movie box office. From the perspective of spatial evolution, the film box office at provincial level presents the characteristics of ladder distribution from east coast to west inland area from high to low.The differences among inland cities, provincial capitals and general prefecture-level cities coexist, but the gap decreases with the passage of time;the box office of first-and second-tier cities declines significantly, and the number of third-tier and lower-tier cities rises sharply. From the point of view of scale characteristics, the structure of movie box office ranking scale shows that the first city is not monopolistic, and there are more cities in the middle rank, and the development of cities in the middle and rear rank is faster than that in the first rank. From the point of view of spatial agglomeration characteristics, the hot spots of movie box office mainly distribute in the Pearl River Delta,Yangtze River Delta and Bohai Rim,while the Bohai Rim area gradually declines and the Yangtze River Delta area continuously strengthens;the hot spots agglomeration area gradually shrinks, the sub-hot spots agglomeration area continuously enlarges, and the cold spots agglomeration area has little change, mainly concentrated in the western region. The third part is the analysis of the influencing factors of the box office space difference of urban films. This paper chooses a series of variables from three aspects of market size, purchasing power and economic development level to carry out multiple linear regression analysis. The results show that the number of high school and above education level, mobile phone users at the end of the year, the number of city cinemas, and housing price pressure are the main factors affecting the spatial distribution of movie box office. The fourth part is to find the bottleneck of the box office development of the city film in the light of the actual situation of the study area, and on this basis to provide targeted suggestions for optimizing the box office development of the city film.
