The common trend of reform and development of education in the world today is changing from capacity education to competence education.The Ministry of Education promulgated English Curriculum for Senior High School in 2017.It put forward key competences of English,which signifies the further deepening and development of English curriculum reform.Key competences of English is composed of linguistic competence,cultural awareness,thinking quality and learning ability.Every aspect cannot be neglected by teachers in the teaching process.But there are few research on key competences of English at present.Besides,the research results are relatively scarce.Therefore,the present study summarizes the research on key competences of English at home and abroad.Based on the Humanism Theory and Constructivism Theory,this paper investigates the 188 students and 96 teachers in 3 senior high schools in the city of Ruzhou,Henan Province.Questionnaire,interview and classroom observation are used in this study.This study mainly discusses the following questions:(1)How is the current situation of senior high school students' key competences of English in the city of Ruzhou?(2)What are the factors that affect the cultivation of key competences of English?(3)What are the countermeasures to solve the problems in the process of cultivating students' of key competences of English?The results are showed below:(1)On the whole,the current situation of cultivating senior high school students' key competences of English is not very optimistic.The development of students' key competences of English are not balanced.In terms of linguistic competence,teachers generally neglect the expression and communication of students.In the aspect of cultural awareness,students are deficient in cross-cultural communication.In terms of thinking quality,students' critical thinking ability and creative thinking ability are at the low level.In the aspect of learning ability,students' learning strategies are relatively single.(2)There are many factors that affect the cultivation of students' key competences of English.English teachers in Ruzhou are not familiar with key competences of English.The functions of education department are deficiency because they do not provide relevant in-service training.Textbooks have little effect on the cultivation of key competences of English.(3)Finally,based on the research results,the author puts forward some feasible suggestions from the perspective of teachers,schools and education department to cultivate students' key competences of English.English teachers should increase the understanding of key competences of English.Besides,they should change their education conception and implement the concept of English teaching activities.Every senior high school should design English curriculum and school-based textbooks reasonably.Education department should provide English teachers with more in-service training.Supervision should be strengthened to urge schools to implement the cultivation of key competence of English.
