This is a report on E-C military translation, whose translation material entitled A Report on the Chinese Translation of the PLA Rocket Force: Evolving beyond the Second Artillery Corps(SAC)and Nuclear Dimension is selected and adopted from CSIS(Center for Strategic and International Studies). This military report is one of the cooperative projects between the Guilin Research Center for Government Digital Dissemination and Culture as a Soft Power and College of Foreign Studies of Guangxi Normal University. This report is based on the theoretical framework of “Comprehension,Expression, and Adaption” proposed by Professor Li Changshuan in Meaning and Expression: Annotated Texts in Chinese-English Translation to explore how to guide translation practice in the three phases. In the Comprehension phase, the source text is comprehended from the lexical level, syntactic level, textual level and figures;in the Expression phase, the author notices that the expressions of the translated text shall convey the most appropriately contextual meaning of the words and retain the structures of the source text, and use authentic Chinese and avoid ambiguity;meanwhile,Adaption refers to the appropriate use of idioms, addition and omission as well as flexible adjustments. The major errors and shortcomings found in this translation practice are mainly due to the failure to follow the framework of “Comprehension,Expression, and Adaption”,resulting in inadequate comprehension, inappropriate expressions,or lack of flexibility. Finally, the author summarizes the major findings, limitations encountered in this translation practice, and puts forward the prospects for the future. These include: translators shall strengthen the basic skills in both Chinese and English, strengthen the accumulation of encyclopedic knowledge,be good at investigation and research, intensify the study of knowledge and apply what they have learned to meet the market demand. The author hopes to grasp the linguistic features of military English texts through this translation practice, and provide some useful experiences for military text translation from the perspective of English-Chinesetranslation.
