Recent years,with the improvement of the new curriculum standards,primary school education pays much more attention to comprehensive development of pupils.English teaching in the period of the compulsory education has to be both instrumental and humanistic.English course charges itself with a task of cultivating students' basic English accomplishment and developing students' thinking ability.The major purpose of English course in the whole period of the compulsory education is to lay the ground work of the students' ability of comprehensive language,and pay the way to continuous learning.The students of Grade four should achieve the first goal according to the English Curriculum Standard(2011).Students should be much curious to English.They can take actions or play a game or move with simple orders by teachers.Therefore,teachers are able to organize the English course with various and plentiful contents and forms in order to bring more positive elements into students and cultivate students' interests.TPR method meets the demands of the English course perfectly.TPR method is raised by famous psychologist James Asher in 1960 s.Many scholars have studied much in theory and practical level.But most of them focus on feasibility question.While few of them pay attention to problems and difficulties of the application of TPR method,and how to solve these problems.This requires us to do a research of the application of TPR method in the process of teaching English in Primary School.The research combs and reorganizes the problems revealed in class according to the notion and research status at home and abroad.The research makes full use of test paper,interview method,Survey coupon,etc.based on 130 students of Grade Four Class one and Class two in Yulin Gaoxin Primary School.Class One is considered to be the contrasted class,while Class Two to be the experimental one.According to the contrastbetween two classes,Class Two takes TPR method,such as the picture,action,video,blackboard,white board,model,and real object,etc.TPR theory is put into practice by using radio and television,newspapers in class.Two problems are paid much attention in the process of using TPR in class.They are whether TPR method can promote students' academic achievement and whether TPR method can improve students' interest in teaching English in Grade Four.Before the research,an exam is done which also is the final examination in the school.The average score of the Class One is 92.73,92.53 for Class Two.It can be obviously found that the level of these two classes is equal.So they can be the samples of the research.After a semester of the TPR method,the score has taken subtle changes.Class One gets 92.67 to be the average score,while Class Two reaches 94.95.The necessity and importance are proved by contrast and experiment between Class One and Class Two in Grade Four.Two surveys by questionnaire among130 students before and after research are finished.According to the results,Class One has no obvious changes,while Class Two has apparent changes.22 students' attitudes towards English has changed because of the teaching methods,which takes 33.8 percent of the whole class.There are 26 persons who choose the middle atmosphere,while it converts 42 persons who thinks to be enjoyable.Students' participation has improved a lot.According to the contrast between two classes,it can be proved that TPR method is controllable.Furthermore,it can be put a theory to the proof that TPR method is of necessity and urgency.
