According to the New Curriculum Standards,English teaching in primary schools should focus on cultivating students' interest in learning and promoting their overall physical and mental development.Teachers carry out a variety of teaching activities in English class in order to arouse students' enthusiasm in learning English.Total Physical Response(TPR)was proposed by James Asher,a famous American psychologist,in the1960 s.It is a foreign language teaching method in line with children's cognitive development.Total Physical Response method transmits and teaches language through body movements and presents it in various forms,which is beneficial for students to learn and create language in a relaxed and pleasant learning environment.Although domestic and foreign scholars have studied the whole body response teaching method from theory to practice extensively,there are few empirical and applied studies on the whole body response teaching method in English vocabulary teaching in primary schools.Based on the relevant theories of the whole-body response teaching method,this paper applies the whole-body response teaching method to English vocabulary teaching in primary schools,and mainly discusses two issues:(1)whether the Total Physical Response method can improve students' interest in English vocabulary learning?(2)whether the Total Physical Response method can improve the students' English vocabulary performance of primary school students?This study adopts the methods of questionnaire survey and experimental research,taking the students of two parallel classes of grade four in the petroleum primary school of Yan 'an as the experimental subjects.The study began in early September 2019 and ended in January 2020.The control class used the traditional teaching method to teach English vocabulary,while the experimental class used the Total Physical Response method to teach English vocabulary.Before the experiment,the first questionnaire surveyand test paper pre-test were conducted on the students of the experimental class and control class.After the 16-week classroom teaching,the final questionnaire survey was conducted on the students of the experimental class,and the test paper post-test was conducted on the students of the experimental class and control class.SPSS software was used to analyze and sort out the collected data and draw some conclusions.Through the analysis of experimental data,this study found that the students in the control class and the experimental class were not interested in learning English vocabulary before the experiment,and the students in the experimental class were significantly more interested in learning English vocabulary after the experiment.At the same time,it was found that students in the control class and the experimental class before the experiment had the same level of English vocabulary.After the experiment,the students in the experimental class improved their English vocabulary significantly.Therefore,the following conclusions can be drawn:(1)Total Physical Response method has an impact on the interest of primary school students in learning English vocabulary,and it can improve the interest of primary school students in learning English vocabulary.(2)Compared with traditional teaching method,Total Physical Response method has more advantages in English vocabulary teaching in primary schools.It can catch students' attention and arouse their enthusiasm in learning.Total Physical Response method can improve students' English vocabulary performance.The aim of this study is to provide some enlightenment in teaching vocabulary for the primary school English teachers,and hopes to increase education department of Total Physical Response teaching method on the cultivation of primary school English teachers as well.Primary school English teachers should also apply Total Physical Response theory to the real teaching,in order to achieve the Total Physical Response method more effectively in English classroom teaching.
