Translation Strategy Of Biographyfrom The Perspective Of Narratology

This thesis tries to explore a combination between narratology and biography translation with a focus on the reproduction of narrative features during the course of translation.This study is valuable and helpful which would provide a fresh viewpoint for employing the techniques of narratology in the translation of biography since narratology is by far mostly applied in fictions rather than non-fictions and the development of biography translation study is relatively lagging behind compared with the enormous demand of biographies in the globalization era.The fact that most biographies narrate numerous historical or personal events strengthens the applicability of narratology on biography translation.Based on major concepts in classical narratology theories such as focalization,speech and duration,the functions of widespread narrative features in The Man Who Knew are studied,and the common obstacles emerged in their reproduction in translation are analyzed.Accordingly,a total of six strategies are proposed,namely,shifting and conversion,amplification,division,literal translation,building reference relation and conjunction relation,which may be important for translators because they give a new insight into the translation of biographies under the guidance of narratology.
