This is an English-Chinese translation report. The original text comes from a novel called Wild Rose —— A Tale of the Rockies written by Howard Roscoe Driggs.Chapter One to Three and the Chapter Six are translated and the translation report is written according to the translation. The novel takes wild roses as the clue, with its unique writing style, perfect novel structure frame, witty language and ups and downs of the storyline to show us the love and hatred on a small farm in the Rocky Mountain Canyon in the United States. The characters in the novel present us with vivid language style and exquisite psychological description which is worth reading and translating. At present, there is no relevant translation version in China, and therefore, the translator wants to provide a more appropriate translation version for the novel through the translation practice. The translation process is divided into three stages, including pre-translation preparation, translation progress and later polishing.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation theory, the translator takes the lexicon, discourse and rhetorics as the starting point, and chooses typical examples for translation analysis and report writing. The difficulties encountered in translation are as follows: how to translate polysemy and culture-loaded words, how to translate character's dialogue and psychological description, how to deal with rhetorical translation to reproduce the original flavor. In terms of lexical level, the translator adopts the semantic extension of the words to deal with polysemy in combination with context,in order to make the target readers understand the deep meaning of the translated text. The translation method of annotation is adopted to deal with culture-loaded words so as to enable the target readers to appreciate the culture connotations to be expressed by the source language. In terms of discourse, thetranslator adopts semantic translation to translate the dialogues of the characters in the novel,in order to preserve the linguistic features of the original work and restore the full image of the characters. With the adjustment of sentence order and the combination of semantic translation and communicative translation, psychological description can be dealt with to vividly reproduce the inner world of the characters,so as to provide the readers with a perfect reading experience on the basis of retaining the original flavor. In terms of rhetorical level, semantic explication and imitation are chosen to translate puns.According to the context, the translator selects semantic translation and supplementation to translate the hyperbole words. This report summarizes the difficulties in translation and the strategies used during the translation. The major findings of the translator are as follows: firstly,as a translator,he or she should understand the geography, history, religion and other culture backgrounds which are contained in the original text to enrich his or her knowledge.Secondly, the translators should have strictly academic spirits and enthusiasm in improving translation skills. Finally, the translator should strengthen the English-Chinese translation skills and improve professional skills in the future translation practices. All those can help the translator to be a qualified translator and a good culture communicator.
