Thomas Thomville Cooper’s Travels of a Pioneer of Commerce in Pigtail and Petticoats was recorded in the Proceedings of Foreign Language Old Books of ’’Chinese Studies" which collected various works on the study of Chinese politics,economy,religion,philosophy,culture,diplomacy,society,military affairs and the enormous like.The book consists of fifteen chapters,which mainly introduces Thomas Thomville Cooper’s and his entourages’ experiences in the second half of the 19th century,as well as the course that they overcame such obstacles as hostility of local pcople.shortage of materials and extreme weather so as to strive forward bravely.The author completed the translation practice report on the basis of translating the source text,and the author is mainly responsible for translating the tenth and the eleventh chapter of the book,which are approximately as many as 15,600 chalracters.The report is divided into five parts.Part one is the introduction.which consists of the content.significance.requirements and organization of the project.Part Two is the preparations for translation,which briefly introduces the author,the analysis of the source text.references to the parallel texts and other related literatures.difficulties in translation,and the quality control.Part Three is the translation theory taken as the guide.namely Peter Newmark’s Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation Theory.Part Four is the case studies from the perspective of the Peter Newmark’s translation theory.in which the author will illustrate the methods used in translation based on vocabulary.sentences and discourse.Part Five is the Conclusion.in which the enlightenment from the project.problems and future effort will be summarized.The report takes Peter Newmark’s Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation Theory as the guide.Meanwhile,in the translation the author tries to convey accurately and smoothly the content of the source text to the target text readers by using a variety of translating methods and techniques.In the concrete translations,the author mainly discusses the translation of proper nouns and other nouns,long and difficult sentences,adverbial clauses,rhetorical sentences,discourse,and so on through the methods and techniques of transliteration,paraphrase,adding annotation,adjusting the sentence order and simplifying the sentence components and so on.The purpose of the report is to explore the translating strategies and methods of tourism texts in the hope of providing the future scholars with some help in the studies on translating the texts of this kind.
