This is a project report on excerpt translation of Default Semantics, which is written by K.M.Jaszczolt,the Professor of Linguistics and Philosophy of Language from University of Cambridge. The book mainly discusses a brand new default semantics approach to discourse interpretation. The approach lays down the foundation for better understanding of pragmatics and semantics. The interface of semantics and pragmatics has long been the issue studied by linguistics learners.Since the Chinese version of Default Semantics hasn't been published yet,the book's translating into Chinese will further advance the theory of linguistics in China.Collaborating with other team number's project, this report is finished based on the part of the book from the cover to section 1.2.The source text characterize theoretical language and its typology belongs to informative texr.Different strategies, such as Amplification and Omission,Word Conversion, and Active-Passive Voice Conversion, have been adopted during-translation according to Reiss' text type and Skopos introduced by Vermeer under the guidance of functional theories. From this translation, the writer makes the conclusion that not only a solid language foundation is necessary for successful translation but also a rich deposit of knowledge and the searching for related resources play an indispensable part in it.
