A Translation Project Report Of Default Semantics(1.3-1.7)

This is a project report on the translation of Section 1.3-1.7 extracted from Default Semantics written by Kasia Jaszczolt,a professor of the university of Cambridge.The titles of these sections are as follows:"Questioning logical form"," Questioning what is said "," Questioning the middle level of meaning ","Representations in rich dynamic semantics","Representations and conscious inference".Through the discussions of logical form,reference,representation and so on,the book expounds the theory of default semantics.This theory,introduced by Kasia Jaszczolt,is a new explanatory theory.Kasia Jaszczolt believes that the establishment of semantic meaning is the result of default reasoning.People can easily find the preferred answer among many options through their inference.When a speaker says something,it is true that he or she is trying to convey some information,but it is the audience's psychological activities that matter because the psychological activities influence the audience's understanding of the content said by the speaker.By analyzing logical form,mental representation and conscious inference,Kasia Jaszczolt explains how a listener comprehends the discourse quickly.Nowadays,the research of semantics has attracted much attention from the scholars,and Default Semantics undoubtedly offers a brand-new perspective for the research of semantics.Therefore,the translation of this book is of great significance.During the translation practice,the author has learnt some useful translation methods and obtained some enlightenment.In order to translate the book precisely,the translator is supposed to know the background information of the book.During the process of translation,when the translator comes across some obstacles,it is better for him or her to turn to others for help,or search some useful information.After completing the translation,the translator should revise and proofread it for many times to make sure there is no mistake in it.
